Founded in 1990, the Personal Protection Institute (PPI) provides
personal security training and consultation for law-abiding citizens who wish
to increase their level of safety and that of their families while at home,
school, work, or in other activities of daily life.
PPI offers a variety of educational programs on personal safety topics, to
include firearms and self-defense training on a regularly scheduled basis
from our headquarters in Virginia, as well as individualized instruction and
planning assistance in both home and workplace security. On-site training
and advisory services are available anywhere in the country or abroad.
About Us
It is the mission of the Personal Protection Institute to provide education
in the areas of personal safety and self-defense to law-abiding citizens of
the United States, and to promote self-reliance, preparedness, and an
awareness of individual rights and responsibilities enjoyed by the citizens of
a free republic. We will accomplish our mission through educational
activities, training opportunities, public information and service projects, as
well as support of organizations and groups whose goals, views, and
activities are in concert with our own and in accordance with the rule of law.
We believe firmly that natural law bestows on each free man or woman,
among other things, the right to live unmolested by criminals. We feel that
acts of violent crime are among the worst violations of the social contract,
and that all decent people have the right to defend themselves against
such acts, using all reasonable force necessary to do so. We are of the
opinion that despite media depictions of criminals as decent but
misunderstood members of society, today’s predatory criminal is as
dangerous to society as a wild or rabid animal. An attack by such a person
can be a life changing or ending event that demands a vigorous and
sometimes, unfortunately a violent response. We are convinced that
modern-day attempts to make self-reliance and self-defense unfashionable,
as well as to disarm the public are misguided and have only served to
increase the incidence of violent crime directed at an ever-more
defenseless citizenry.
At the Institute, we provide training and education to law-abiding private
citizens who wish to live a safer life in an increasingly unsafe world.
Through our programs, we foster increased awareness of the criminal
threat, provide avoidance strategies, encourage evasion rather than
engagement, and provide detailed information on armed and unarmed
resistance methods that may be required to survive a criminal encounter.
We further provide vital information to the private citizen so that they can
protect themselves within the confines of an increasingly complicated legal
environment. All of us at the Institute truly wish that none of our students
would ever need to use anything we teach, but many already have. For
detailed descriptions of our course offerings and client services, please visit
our Services page.
The Personal Protection Institute doesn’t train police agencies, security
officers, or provide instruction to the military or clandestine operations units,
all frequent claims of some so-called “self-defense” schools in the post 9/11
world. Many of these schools simply try to generalize information and tactics
appropriate for the police and military to civilian situations and needs, but at
PPI, we feel that's a mistake.
While our founder and many of our instructors have experience in these
areas and do provide some of these services in other settings, these just
aren’t our primary areas of interest at PPI. There are plenty of groups doing
this kind of training and some of them are truly great organizations. If you
really need this sort of thing, you should already know where to find it. We
feel strongly that the circumstances under which private citizens defend
themselves are so different from those faced by police or military units that
there is very little crossover in training beyond basic shooting skills, which
are hardly the most important things you’ll need to know about self-defense.
We also feel that the mindset required for successful police or military
operations is different from the totally defensive mindset required of private
citizens in today’s legal environment, and that today’s armed citizen needs
training geared to their special needs, abilities, and level of dedication. We
believe that programs developed specifically for them better serve the
private citizen, rather than some slightly modified police, security, or military
training. Police officers, security personnel, members of the military, and
protection agents do however, take advantage of programs presented by the
Institute to increase their level of personal security, and to meet the defense
training needs of their families. We are honored that these professionals
have entrusted us with the safety training of their loved ones.
All of us at the Personal Protection Institute are much like you, private
citizens with an interest in personal security, safety, and self-reliance. Our
instructors have a variety of teaching credentials and certifications, as well
as backgrounds in law enforcement, security, military, emergency services
or legal environments. Some have experience in the firearms industry or in
competition, some have been victims of violent crime, but all have a sincere
desire to help make their neighbors safer. You won’t find any “Gun Show
Commandos” or “Strange Rangers” teaching in any PPI class. Our
instructors are here to treat you with friendship and respect, while helping
you develop or extend your defensive capabilities. We like to think of our
students as family, which is perhaps why so many have come back time and
again to our courses. We think you will, too.
